A great CV is your most important asset when searching for a position as a supply teacher in a new school. It's your chance to make a good first impression and show potential employers why you're the best candidate for the job.
In this blog, we'll give you our top tips on how to write a supply teacher CV that will get you noticed.
1. Keep it concise
Keep it brief and to the point. Aim for no more than two pages in your CV and avoid unnecessary waffle. Employers only want to read relevant information for the role they are recruiting for. Summarise skills and experience that you know the school is looking for in a clear and concise way.
2. Choose a clear layout and font
Make sure you create an easy to read layout for your CV. Define clear sections with headings and sub headings throughout your document for the important information (contact details, personal profile, experience, skills, qualifications and interests). You can find free CV templates online if you don’t feel confident making one yourself.
When formatting your CV, choose a simple and legible font with a size of 11 or 12pts. Gold Education Recruitment are happy to advise candidates on their CV in the application process. We are here to help if you need any guidance.
3. Put your contact details at the top of the page
Keep enough space at the top of your CV to include your contact details - name, home address, contact number, and email address. Make sure your name stands out on your CV, making it easy for potential employers to notice you. Remember to only include a professional email address, preferably with your real name and a modern email provider such as gmail.com or outlook.com.
4. Write a strong bio
It's the first thing employers read when they look at your CV so this is the moment to impress and explain why you are an excellent fit. A personal profile or bio is around three sentences long and is a great way to introduce yourself to potential employers and highlight your most relevant skills and experience. Don’t forget your why - why you love teaching, why supply teaching is your choice, why you are perfect for the role.
5. Detail your skills and work experience
Next it is important to detail your skills and experience.
What keywords are relevant to the position you're applying for?
What classroom experience do you have that would make you a valuable asset to a school?
If you're applying for a job as a supply teacher in a primary school, you might want to highlight your experience working with younger children.
6. List your qualifications
Your qualifications are one of the most important things that employers will look at on your CV. List all of your relevant education and teaching qualifications, including your teaching degree and any additional qualifications you have.
7. Elaborate on your interests
While it’s not a compulsory part of your CV, some people like to add a personal touch at the bottom of the document and add a section that showcases their hobbies, passions or interests. Think of things that not only showcase who you are as a person, but interests that complement the values of education professionals.
Here are some additional tips for writing a supply teacher CV:
● Proofread your document to make sure there’s no errors, duplicates or mistakes
● Use professional fonts like Times New Roman, Arial and Calibri
● Avoid using exclamation marks and informal or passive language
● Provide evidence where possible by quantifying your achievements
● Include white space in your document so information is easy to read
Don’t forget your online presence
Whilst we’re focusing on tips for your CV in this blog, please don’t forget the importance of your LinkedIn profile. Many employers will look on LinkedIn for further information about potential candidates, and so it is important that your online presence mirrors what you say and believe in the CV you produce. Ensure you have a clear photo, an accurate and engaging bio, have a keyworded profile and a clear working and academic history.
