A Call to Aspiring Teachers
The upcoming general election on this July is poised to bring significant changes and uncertainty to the UK education sector. As the government enters the pre-election “purdah” period, public bodies, including government departments, local authorities and educational institutions, will be restricted from making announcements or decisions that could influence voters. This period will halt various key decisions and initiatives.
Paused policies and pending pledges.
Several critical consultations and proposed policies are now in limbo due to the election. For instance, the Advanced British Standard consultation, which closed in March, aimed at reforming qualifications, and included compulsory maths and English until age 18, is now uncertain. Labour has indicated it would abandon this plan if elected.
Similarly, the proposed minimum service levels for schools during strikes, which the government has yet to respond to, would be scrapped under a Labour government. Other consultations, such as maintaining voluntary registers for children not in school, gender questioning children guidance, relationships, sex, and health education, faith schools admissions cap, and national standards for unregistered alternative provision, are all on hold.
The election also impacts several ongoing policies and initiatives. The teacher workload reduction taskforce’s final recommendations, aimed at cutting teacher workload by five hours a week, has been delayed. The refresh of the 2019 recruitment and retention strategy, crucial for addressing teacher shortages, is frustratingly now on hold.
Promised educational resources like the model history curriculum and the cultural education plan remain unpublished, and the consultation on content for a new natural history GCSE, due to be introduced by next year, is yet to begin. The SEND reforms currently being trailed will also fall to the next government for decision-making.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg with Ofsted’s grading system proposed replacement of a ‘report card,’ the academisation of about 800 maintained schools could be slowed, and proposed policies aimed at student attendance all up in the air. Additionally, an independent review of Oak National Academy, the announcement of Ofqual’s permanent chief regulator, and the government's response to the Khan Review on teacher harassment are all delayed.
However, whilst there are lots of proposals up in the air during the election period, now is the time to focus on what policies you were fighting for, which you were relieved to hear had been delayed and how you would improve the education system. This will help you determine which party aligns most with your wants and needs for our beloved education system.
